B’Haram kills 48 fish vendors

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed 48 fish vendors after setting up a roadblock near the country’s border with Chad, the head of the fish traders association told the Agence France- Presse on Sunday. “Scores of Boko Haram fighters blocked a route linking Nigeria with Chad near the fishing village of Doron Baga on the shores of Lake Chad on Thursday and killed a group of 48 fish traders on their way to Chad to buy fish,” AFP quoted Abubakar Gamandi, head of the fish traders association, as saying. Gamandi said the attackers set up a barricade at Dogon Fili, 15 kilometres from Doron Baga in Borno State, and stopped a convoy of fish vendors around midday, slaughtering some of them and drowning others in the lake. “The Boko Haram gunmen slit the throats of some of the men and tied the hands and legs of the others before throwing them into the lake to drown,” Gamandi told AFP by telephone from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. It was unclear if the motive for the

Bombs uncovered on Egypt railway tracks

A charred body has been found near a train station in southern Egypt after a bomb exploded, as police uncovered three unexploded devices planted on railway tracks in the region. The blast took place on Saturday night in the town of Al-Wasta, in the province of Beni Suef, south of Cairo. The interior ministry said in a statement that the body probably belonged to the person who had planted the bomb. The unexploded bombs were found on railway lines linking Cairo to the far southern city of Aswan, the ministry said. Egypt has been hit by a wave of bombings and shootings since the military ousted President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Assailants have stepped up attacks targeting public transport, including a bomb last week on a train north of Cairo that killed two policemen and two passengers. On Thursday, four people were hurt in a stampede at the capital’s Ramses station after a blast inside a compartment of a train that pulled in from the Nile Delta, security offic

Jonathan to Obasanjo: I’m Nigeria’s best leader

President Goodluck Jonathan has described himself as the best leader to be produced by Nigeria. The President said no leader since the country gained independence in 1960 had done better than himself for the country. He, therefore, said the comment made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in which the ex-President described Jonathan’s performance as below average, was untrue. Jonathan said this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in Abuja on Sunday. Okupe’s statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to comments made by a former President of this country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, regarding the performance of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. “Obasanjo had at an event over the weekend declared that he rated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration ‘below average’. “We aver that Obasanjo’s comments are untrue, misleading and clearly do not tally with the facts on the ground. “We therefore wish to

FFK calls Governor Amaechi pot bellied, house boy, monkey and cultist

In a post titled The Pot-bellied Creek Haramite And His Direct Threat, which he posted on Facebook, former Aviation minister Femi Fani Kayode slammed River State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, calling him a cultist, house boy and monkey. These our leaders have no chill sha..lol. What he wrote below.. ''If the PDP rig the election in 2015 we will not go to court and we will make the country ungovernable. We will form a parallel government and there will be anarchy''- Governor Rotimi Amaechi. It is time for the President to take off the kid gloves and put this pot-bellied little monkey in his place. Once a houseboy, always a houseboy. Once a cult member always a cult member. Once a peasant, always a peasant. But why are our leaders saying stuff like this? That there will be anarchy in this country? Continue... If Rotimi and his Haramite friends are looking for trouble then we should give it to them in full measure. It would be a pleasure. Defence HQ discredits all stories of liberation of towns by some hunters

The Nigeria military just released a statement discrediting all those stories you've read about hunters and local vigilantes helping to liberate towns captured by Boko Haram in the North East. They are basically saying they are the ones who did it...with some help of course. I believe them. Find their statement after the cut... Misrepresenting the involvement of hunters in the counter-terrorism operations All the flimsy and exaggerated claims of hunters’ exploits in the ongoing operations are simply intended to foster a mischievous campaign aimed at disparaging and depreciating the professional efforts of the Nigerian military at containing the terrorists especially in Adamawa. It is obvious that the intention is to ridicule and discourage the military. We are not moved. While appreciating the effort of the hunters and citizens who have been supporting our troops in the onslaught, the military still remains in the vanguard of the mission to rid the nation of

President Obama to grant legal status to 4.5m illegal US immigrants

Yesterday, President Obama made a blockbuster announcement on immigration that got a lot of Americans divided. In his new plan, about 4.5 illegal immigrants in the US will now be able to get legal status and allowed to apply for work permits. This applies to only those who have no criminal records, have been in the US illegally for at least 5 years and are willing to pay their outstanding tax. The Republicans are angry though and call it "lawless amnesty". They believe it will encourage more people to arrive the US unlawfully. "The action by the president yesterday will only encourage more people to come here illegally. It also punishes those who have obeyed the law and waited their turn." Republican Speaker of the House said today But fortunately for Obama, he doesn't need the permission of congress to do this. It's called executive action - where a president can bypass the legislature, which he has done. Continue... There are about 1

‘Preach Gospel The Modern Way To Retain Youth’

The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, has challenged the clergy in the Catholic Church to change their way of preaching in order to attract and retain the youth in the church. “The young people of today want to be heard and be part of the conversation. So if you insist on only talking to them, you will lose them. So, it is important that the two-way communication channels are opened,” he stressed. Mr Ashigbey also suggested that the church should open a channel for the congregation for its feedback. Trainer of trainers’ seminar Mr Ashigbey threw the challenge last Wednesday when he delivered a lecture on the topic, “The new evangelisation and social communications” at a day’s seminar organised by the Accra Archdiocese of the church to fashion out ways of sustaining and bringing the word to the doorsteps of people, through evangelisation. The seminar, attended by representatives of all the six deaneries in the arch

Gospel Singers Must Not Focus On Entertainment

The Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Kwaku Asante, Outgoing Presiding Bishop of Methodist Church, Ghana, has said Church Choirs and gospel musicians should win souls for Christ with their songs instead of providing mere entertainment. “There is the need for you to realize that your primary duty in singing is not for entertainment so let what you sing expose your listeners to the wide range of biblical image and story, backed by the power that spirit imparts for the holistic redemption of our faith communities, ”he said. He was speaking at the official opening of the 15th Biennial National Delegates Conference of the Association of Methodist Church Choirs, Ghana (GHAMECC) at Cape Coast, Most Rev. Asante also challenged hymn and song composers to write songs that built faith and trust in God. Most Rev. Asante said singing, like preaching, was a powerful tool, which imparted the word of God to Christians and non-believers for effective Christian formation and growth.

Cameroon's army faces Boko Haram on Nigerian border

Amchide - A deathly silence hangs over the once lively trading town of Amchide in the far north of Cameroon, abandoned to the army by residents terrified of raids by extremists, Boko Haram. After several attacks in the past year by the armed extremists from Nigeria, just across the western border, the vast majority of residents have fled. Houses of clay and brick stand abandoned with nobody to cook in the courtyards, while colourful robes and children's laughter are things of the past. The sole remaining human presence is a military one, dug in about 800 metres (875 yards) from the frontier and the lethal threat on the other side. "Before, this was a bustling town, with crowds. Chadians, Cameroonians and Nigerians came here and traded in all kinds of things," said Abba, who comes from a nearby village. Many people in Amchide ran the risk of atrocities and kidnapping by Boko Haram for months, but the situation further worsened when the Islamists in
